May 17, 2017MANUFACTURING SHIPMENTS, MARCH 2017 Nova Scotia
Nova Scotia’s seasonally adjusted manufacturing shipments increased 6.7% in March 2017 to $672.2 million, and increased 2.2% over March 2016.
For the first three months of the year (January-March), seasonally adjusted manufacturing shipments are 0.2% higher in 2017 than in 2016.
Unadjusted year-to-date (Jan-Mar)
- non-durable shipments account for 66% of manufacturing shipments in 2017 and increased 2.2% over the same period last year.
- Food manufacturing, with a 28% share, was down 0.3%,
- Beverages and tobacco, with a 2% share, are up 1.8%, and
- Plastic and rubber, with a 22% share, are up 5.7% over the same period last year.
- durable goods manufacturing accounts for 34% of shipments in 2017, contracted 2.9%.
- Wood products, with a 6% share, are up 3.4%,
- Non-metallic mineral products, with a 1% share, are up 12.4%,
- Fabricated metal products, with a 4% share, are down 0.3%,
- Machinery products, with a 2% share, are down 10.2%,
- Computer and electronics, with a 2% share, are down 23.2% and
- Transportation Equipment, with a 15% share, are down 1.4% over the same period last year.
Canada
Canada manufacturing sales were up 1.0% to $53.9 billion in March 2017, and up 8.2% above last year. Compared to February 2017, overall sales were up in 16 of 21 industries as durable goods increased 1.3% and non-durable goods increased 0.7%.
Sales increased 2.1% in Transportation equipment: Motor vehicle were up 4.5% and motor vehicle parts were up 1.8%.
In Food industries, sales values were up 2.6% to a record high of $8.9 billion, and sales volumes were up 2.2%.
Inventory levels increased 1.2% in March 2017 to a record high of $72.7 billion. Unfilled orders were up 1.8% to $90.2 billion, and new orders were up 2.6% to $55.4 billion over February 2017.
Provinces
Manufacturing sales were down in four provinces in March 2017 Nova Scotia, at +6.7%, ranked 2nd in percentage growth behind Prince Edward Island (+14.6%).
On a year-over-year basis (seasonally adjusted), manufacturing shipments are up 8.2% in Canada, with all provinces recording positive year-over-year growth. Newfoundland and Saskatchewan led the way at 19.8%.
On a year-to-date basis, manufacturing shipments growth (unadjusted) was positive in Canada (+6.0%), with large gains in Newfoundland (+26.6%), and double digit gains in New Brunswick (+13.8%), Prince Edward Island (+11.2%), Saskatchewan (+16.9%) and Alberta (+15.5%). Nova Scotia (+0.4%) ranked 10th.
