EU AND EURO AREA RETAIL SALES, MARCH 2017

In March 2017, the seasonally adjusted volume of retail trade in the Euro Area (EA19) rose by 0.3 per cent on a month to month basis. In the European Union (EU28), retail trade fell by 0.2 per cent monthly. Last month, the EA19 volume of retail trade increased by 0.5 per cent and rose by 0.7 per cent in the EU28.

In year over year terms, March 2017 saw a 2.3 per cent gain in the calendar adjusted retail sale index for the Euro Area, and a 2.5 per cent gain in the EU28.

Non-food products (+0.4%) and "food, drinks and tobacco" (+0.2%) contributed to the rise in monthly retail trade in the euro area, while automotive fuel fell by 0.3 per cent. In the EU28, decreases in trade volumes is due to declines in automotive fuel (-0.4%) and non-food products (-0.3%), while "food, drinks and tobacco" rose by 0.1 per cent.

The European Union (EU28) includes Belgium, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Ireland, Greece, Spain, France, Croatia, Italy, Cyprus, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Hungary, Malta, the Netherlands, Austria, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Slovakia, Finland, Sweden and the United Kingdom.
