Nonfarm business sector labour productivity in the US decreased by 0.6 per cent (seasonally adjusted annualized rate) in Q1 2017, as output increased 1.0 per cent and hours worked rose 1.6 per cent. Unit labour costs increased 3.0 per cent reflecting the 0.6 per cent decline in productivity and a 2.4 per cent increase in hourly compensation. Hourly compensation has increased faster than productivity in nine of the past ten quarters.
Manufacturing sector labour productivity increased 0.4 per cent in Q1 with output increasing 2.8 per cent and hours worked increasing 2.4 per cent. Productivity was down .1 per cent for durable goods but increased 3.2 per cent in the nondurable goods sector. Unit labour costs were up 2.1 per cent in manufacturing.
