US CONSUMER PRICE INDEX, MARCH 2017

The US Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers decreased 0.3 per cent in March 2017 (seasonally adjusted) on a month to month basis. The decline was the first month to month decline since February 2016. In March, the energy index declined 3.2 per cent with all major energy components showing price declines. The decline in energy prices was partly offset by increases in food, shelter, and transportation.

Over the last 12 months, the all items index increased 2.4 per cent before seasonal adjustment, down from 2.7 per cent year over year, last month. The 12-month increase has been trending upwards since a July 2016 trough of 0.8 per cent.

The index for all items less food and energy decreased 0.1 per cent in March. For the 12-months ending in March, the index for all items less food and energy rose 2.0 per cent, the energy index increased 10.9 per cent, and the food index was up 0.5 per cent.
