NOVA SCOTIA - QUEBEC: INTER-PROVINCIAL TRADE 2013

The trade flow data from the National Accounts Input-Output tables represent provincial total and net expenditures for interprovincial (intP) markets. Data is provided for exports and imports, goods and services and for 488 commodity (IOCC) levels. The following is an analysis of interprovincial trade between Nova Scotia and Quebec, highlighting the top 25 commodities in goods and in services.

 Exports and Imports

In 2013, Nova Scotia the value of total trade (import plus exports) with Quebec was over $4.0 billion. More than half (59% or $2.356 billion) of this trade was in imports from Quebec and another 41% ($1.647 billion) in exports to Quebec.

  

  Goods and Services

Rearranging the total trade components into goods and services reveals that 55% of Nova Scotia - Quebec trade is trade in goods, and 45% of trade in services.

In 2013 the value of Nova Scotia - Quebec services trade was $1.8 billion. Nova Scotia imported $1.1 billion worth of services from Quebec and exported $681 million worth of services to Quebec. 

In 2013, the value of Nova Scotia – Quebec goods trade was $2.2 billion. Nova Scotia exported $965 million worth of goods to Quebec and imported $1.24 billion worth of goods from Quebec.  

 

Nova Scotia - Quebec:  Exports

 

GOODS

In 2013 Nova Scotia exported $965 million worth of goods to Quebec.

In Nova Scotia 2013, the top goods export to Quebec in 2013 was Ships. Total value was $185 million and represent 19% of total goods exports. The number two goods commodity was Aircraft Parts, valued at $154 million and represented 16% of total goods exports to Quebec. Together they account for $339 million or 35% of Nova Scotia goods exports to Quebec.

The next four commodities, represent 29% of total goods exports. Together they are valued at $267 million. They are, 1) Tires, 2) Fish, 3) Gasoline, and 4) Poultry.  

The top 25 goods commodities total $895 million and represent 92.7% of Nova Scotia’s goods exports to Quebec.

 

SERVICES

In 2013 Nova Scotia exported $681 million worth of services to Quebec.

Commercial machinery services (9%, $63.7 million), Water Freight (7%, $49 million), and Prepared meals (6%, $41 million) are the top three service exports from Nova Scotia to Quebec. Together they total $154 million or $23% of total service exports.

The next three services (Wholesale margins, Head office services, and Retail Margins) total $87 million and account for 13% of services exports.

The next five service exports to Quebec (School bus services; Computer Systems Services; Business Support Services; Rail Transport Support Services; and Office Admin Services) account for 15% of service export trade and total $100 million.

 Together the top 25 account for 76% of service exports valued at $515 million.

 

Nova Scotia - Quebec:  Imports

 

GOODS

In 2013 Nova Scotia imported $1.2 billion worth of goods from Quebec.

The top goods Nova Scotia import from Quebec in 2013 was Aircraft, valued at $167 million, and accounting for 13% of total goods imports.

The next two goods imports were Light fuel oils (9%, $112 million) and Other Inorganic Chemicals (8%, $93 million).

The next three were Chemical Products n.e,c. (4%, $44 million), Pharmaceuticals (4%, $44 million), and Fuel wood (3%, $36 million).

Together, the top six goods products total $496 million, or 40% of total goods imports.

The top 25 goods imports account for 67.9% of trade and $841 million.

 

 

SERVICES

In 2013 Nova Scotia imported $1.1 billion worth of services from Quebec.

Wholesale ($297 million) is the lead service commodity accounting for 27% of Nova Scotia imports of services from Quebec.

The next four services account for 18% ($205 million) of services imports from Quebec – Aircraft maintenance (6%, $67 million); Retail margins (5%, $61 million); and Specialized Freight (3%, $28 million).

The top five account for 45% ($502 million)  of services imports from Quebec.

The top 25 services commodities total $854 million and represent 76% of Nova Scotia's services imports from Quebec.
