April 03, 2017JAPAN CPI INFLATION, FEBRUARY 2017
Inflation in Japan slowed from 0.5 per cent (year-over-year) in January to 0.2 per cent in February. Excluding food and energy, Japan's inflation has been slowing, with the underlying index declining 0.1 per cent on a year-over-year basis in February.
For the first time since early 2015, Japan's energy prices are up on a year-over-year basis, rising by 1.5 per cent from the lows of early 2016. Food price inflation, however, has slowed to 0.8 per cent.
Japanese inflation has been persistently below inflation reported in Canada and Nova Scotia for much of the last two years. Stabilizing energy prices are a global phenomenon and with it, inflation is returning across many advanced economies. However, Japan's inflation remains lower than the growth of the CPI in either Canada or Nova Scotia.
