MANUFACTURING SHIPMENTS, JANUARY 2017

 

Nova Scotia

Nova Scotia’s manufacturing shipments (seasonally adjusted) decreased 5.3% in January to $656 million, and increased 0.6% over January 2016.

Unadjusted Shipments

In January, non-durable shipments (unadjusted) account for 64% of manufacturing shipments and decreased 0.2% over the same period last year. Decreases in food manufacturing (-3.5%) offset increases in plastic and rubber (+1.5%). Details on paper are unavailable this month.

In January, durable goods manufacturing made up 36% of shipments, growing at 2.3%. Wood products, with a 7% share, are up 15.2%. Fabricated metal products, with a 4% share, are up 4.6%, and Machinery products, with a 2% share, are down 1.6%. Computer & Electronics with a 2% share are down 35.9% over January 2016.

  

 

Canada

Canada manufacturing sales were up 0.6% to $53.8 billion in January, and up 2.7% above last year. Overall, sales were up in 14 of 21 industries as non-durable goods increased 2.3% while durables declined 0.8%.

Sales decreased 2.9% in transportation equipment. Petroleum and coal were up 7.0%, and sales also increased 2.5% in chemical manufacturing.

Inventory levels increased 1.1% in January to $70.5 billion. Unfilled orders were up 0.3% to $87.7 billion.

 

 

Provinces

Month-over-month seasonally adjusted manufacturing sales were up in seven provinces in January.   Sales were down in Nova Scotia, Quebec and Britich Columbia.

 

In January, seasonally adjusted year-over-year manufacturing shipments are up 2.7% in Canada,  with eight provinces recording positive year-over-year growth. Newfoundland led the way at 39.1%. Nova Scotia ranked 7th, with Manitoba at 0.6%. Two provinces (New Brunswick (-3.6%) and Ontario (-1.1%) recorded negative growth.
