US CONSUMER PRICE INDEX, FEBRUARY 2017

The US Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers increased 0.1 per cent in February 2017 (seasonally adjusted). February's increase was the smallest 1-month increase since July 2016.  In February, the energy index declined as a decline in gasoline prices outweighed increases in other energy components.  The decline in energy prices was partly offset by increases in food, shelter, and recreation.

Over the last 12 months, the all items index increased 2.7 per cent before seasonal adjustment, the largest 12-month increase since March 2012.   The 12-month increase has been trending upwards since a July 2016 trough of 0.8 per cent.

The index for all items less food and energy increased 0.2 per cent in February.  For the 12-months ending in February, the index for all items less food and energy rose 2.2 per cent, the energy index increased 15.2 per cent, and the food index was unchanged.
