Nova Scotia's housing starts (seasonally adjusted annualized rate) increased 50.7 per cent to 5,555 in February, an increase of 14.7 per cent compared with the revised result for February 2016. The Halifax market accounted for 70 per cent of the starts with 3,927.
Compared to February 2016, Nova Scotia housing starts were up 14.7 per cent while Halifax starts were up 14.1 per cent.
Across the country, the pace of housing starts increased by 0.6 per cent to 210,207 in February compared to January. Housing starts are 3.8 per cent lower than in February 2016.
Housing starts for January-February 2017 were up for six provinces compared to first two months of 2016. Newfoundland and Labrador, Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia had lower housing starts than January-February 2016.
The six month average of housing starts increased through most of 2016, starting the year at around 2,500 and rising to around 4,000 by the end of the year. Similarly, the Halifax trend also increased over the past year.
