CANADIAN ECONOMIC ACCOUNTS ANNUAL 2016

For 2016, real GDP rose 1.4 per cent following growth of 0.9 per cent in 2015. Final domestic demand grew 0.9 per cent driven by household consumption expenditures at the beginning of the year. Household consumption grew 2.2 per cent with increases in goods(+2.7%) and services(+1.9%).  Government final consumption expenditures rose 2.0 per cent. Business investment was lower for the second consecutive year on weakness in the energy sector. Housing investment grew 2.9 per cent with growth in ownership transfers costs, new construction and renovations. Exports of goods and services was up 1.1 per cent as services grew 4.0 per cent and goods rose 0.5 per cent. Imports of goods was lower.

The terms of trade declined 2.1 per cent, following on a 6.9 per cent drop in 2015. The GDP deflator grew 0.6 per cent after falling in 2015. Household disposable income was up 3.8 per cent. Household consumption in nominal terms was up a smaller 3.2 per cent, with an increase in the household savings rate from 5.0 per cent to 5.3 per cent.
