LABOUR FORCE SURVEY - JANUARY 2017

In Nova Scotia January 2017 (seasonally-adjusted, month-over-month and year-over-year):

  • Labour force increased 0.3% (+1,600) from December 2016 to 490,500 and increased 1.2% (+6,000) over January 2016.
  • Employment increased 0.9% (+4,200) from December 2016 to 452,700 and increased 2.2% (+9,800) over January 2016.
  • Unemployment decreased 6.2% (-2,500) from December 2016 to 37,900 and decreased 8.9% (-3,700) over January 2016.
  • Unemployment rate decreased 0.6 percentage points from December 2016 to 7.7%.


In Canada January 2017 (seasonally-adjusted, month-over-month and year-over-year):

  • Labour force increased 0.2%  (+31,100) from December 2016 to 19.6 million and increased 1.1% (+212,500) over January 2016.
  • Employment increased 0.3% (+48,300) from December 2016 to 18.3 million and increased 1.5% (+276,100) over January 2016.
  • Unemployment decreased 1.3% (-17,200) from December 2016 to 1.3 million and decreased 4.6% (-63,600) over January 2016.
  • Unemployment rate decreased 0.1 percentage points from December 2016 to 6.8%.


In Halifax January 2017 (3 month moving average, seasonally adjusted):

  • Labour force remained virtually unchanged (-100) from December 2016 to 240,400 and increased 0.6% (+1,500) over January 2016.
  • Employment increased 0.1% (+300) from December 2016 to 226,100 and increased 1.2% (+2,600) over January 2016.
  • Unemployment decreased 2.7% (-400) from December 2016 to 14,300 and decreased 7.1% (-1,100) over January 2016.
  • Unemployment rate decreased 0.2 percentage points from December 2016 to 5.9%.
