NEW HOUSING PRICE INDEX, DECEMBER AND ANNUAL 2016

The price of new housing was unchanged in December in Nova Scotia and increased 0.1 per cent Canada compared to November 2016.  This followed a 0.2 per cent increase in November in Nova Scotia. In Canada, new housing prices have increased for 21 consecutive months and have been on a general upward trend since 2009.

Nova Scotia new housing prices are 1.1 per cent above the level in December 2015. National housing prices are 3.0 per cent above their levels in December 2015. 

Across Canada, Ontario (+6.3 per cent) and British Columbia (+4.2 per cent) saw the fastest increases in new housing prices from December 2015 to December 2016. Saskatchewan, Alberta, and Newfoundland and Labrador saw declines in new housing prices.  

Comparing 2016 to 2015, new housing prices in Nova Scotia increased 0.4 per cent compared with a 2.5 per cent increase in Canada.

Census Metropolitan Areas

Among Census Metropolitan Areas tracked by the new housing price index, prices in 2016 increased at faster rate around the Greater Toronto Area as well as in Vancouver. New housing prices have declined in Edmonton, Calgary, Saskatoon, Regina, and Quebec. In Halifax, new housing prices increased by 0.4 per cent in 2016.
