NOVA SCOTIA INTERNATIONAL MERCHANDISE TRADE DECEMBER and ANNUAL 2016

In Nova Scotia for January-December 2016,  merchandise exports ($5.224 billion) decreased $122.4 million over the Jan-Dec 2015 exports ($5.346 billion). Increases in  consumer, fishing, motor vehicles/parts  and other exports were not sufficient to offset declines in chemicals, forestry and energy products.


Year-to-date (YTD ) results for:  

  • Energy products have decreased from $226 million to $85 million;
  • Forestry products have decreased from $671 million to $595 million;
  • Chemicals, plastics and rubber products have decreased from $335 million to $299 million; 
  • Consumer products have increased from $1.283 billion to $1.3696 billion; 
  • Farm, fishing and intermediate food products increased from $883 million to $898 million;
  • Motor vehicles and parts increased from $1.259 billion to $1.277 billion;
  • the remaining commodities have increased from $689 million to $700 million.



YTD by Province




In Jan-Dec 2016, Nova Scotia ranked sixth from among the provinces in growth of domestic exports. Year-to-date exports decreased 2.3 per cent over the same period last year. Canadian exports are down 2.7 per cent. Nova Scotia's non-energy exports have increased 0.4 per cent over Jan-Dec 2015. Nationally, non-energy exports are up 0.8 per cent with Nova Scotia ranking 6th among the provinces.

In 2005 Nova Scotia exported $5,6 billion worth of goods to the international market.  In 2012, Nova Scotia recorded an export value low of $3.835 billion. Since then exports have increased to $5.346 in 2015, only to fall back to $5.224 in 2016.

Excluding Energy Products, in 2005 Nova Scotia exported $4.234 billion worth of goods and in 2016 Nova Scotia exported $5.139 billion worth of goods. Nova Scotia export trade has generally expanded over the 2005-2016 period.
