US PRODUCTIVITY, 2016 Q4

 

Nonfarm business sector labour productivity in the US increased by 1.3 per cent (seasonally adjusted annualized rate) in Q4 2016, as output increased 2.2 per cent and hours worked rose 0.9 per cent. This was the second quarter of increase after three consecutive quarterly declines in labour productivity. Compared to Q4 2015 productivity increased 1.0 per cent, reflecting an increase in output of 2.2 per cent and in hours worked of 1.1 per cent. Unit labour costs increased by 1.7 per cent in Q4 2016 as the 1.3 per cent increase in productivity coincided with an hourly compensation increase of 3.0 per cent.

On an annual basis, US nonfarm business sector labour productivity increased 0.2 per cent in 2016 compared to 2015, reflecting an increase in output of 1.7 per cent and in hours worked of 1.5 per cent. Unit labour costs increased 2.6 per cent, as hourly compensation increased 2.8 per cent for the year.
