Japanese prices increased 0.3 per cent from December 2015 to December 2016. This is the third consecutive month in which year-over-year inflation has been positive for Japan. Rising food prices (+2.6 per cent) and lighter drag from lower energy prices (-4.4 per cent) account for the renewed inflationary pressure. Excluding food and energy (but including alcoholic beverages), Japanese inflation was 0.0 per cent.
Except for the period after which a sales tax increase was implemented in April 2014, Japanese inflation has been largely below comparable price indices for Canada and Nova Scotia, particularly through the first 8 months of 2016.
ANNUAL
Japanese prices decreased 0.1 per cent from 2015 to 2016. Excluding food and energy (but including alcoholic beverages), Japanese inflation was 0.3 per cent.
Rising food prices (+1.7 per cent) countered by much lower energy prices (-10.2 per cent) account for the negative annual change in inflation.
