The Capital Markets Administration division of the Department of Finance manages the Unclaimed Intestate Estate Funds – where individuals die and the heirs are missing and cannot be located. These unclaimed estates are converted to cash by the Public Trustee’s Office.
Unclaimed Intestate Estate Funds are transferred to the Minister of Finance who holds them in trust until they are authorized by Governor in Council or ordered by the courts to release them to rightful heirs or for a legislated time limit of 40 years, whichever is lesser. At the end of 40 years, any unclaimed funds can be transferred to General Revenues.
