Secure Treatment at Wood Street Centre Campus

Wood Street Centre Campus provides a secure treatment program for children and youth who are in the care of the Minister of Community Services or Mi’kmaw Family & Children’s Services of Nova Scotia and who are suffering from an emotional and/or behavioural disorder and who require confinement in order to remedy or alleviate the disorder.

Wood Street Centre Secure Treatment is located in Truro, Nova Scotia and operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The average age of young people who access the program is between the ages of 12 and 18. However, some may be younger than 12, depending on individual circumstances.

As many as 140 young people may pass through the program each year.

Wood Street Centre Secure Treatment is a 20-bed facility, with 10 beds located on two co-ed living units, classrooms, indoor and outdoor recreational area, clinical, administrative and meeting spaces.

Residential Treatment at Wood Street Centre Campus

Children and youth admitted to Wood Street Centre Residential Treatment present with a wide range of complex behavioural and/or emotional challenges that are addressed through individualized treatment plans.

An interdisciplinary team, which includes youth workers, social workers, teachers, registered nurse, psychologist, occupational therapist, behavioural interventionist, clinical director, unit supervisors, and program manager along with a consulting psychiatrist and medical doctor provides stabilization, assessment, and treatment services.

Wood Street Centre Residential Treatment is an 18-bed facility located on Wood Street Centre campus.

Referrals

These programs are only available to children and youth in care of the Minister of Community Services or Mi’kmaw Family & Children’s Services. In order to ensure the necessary legislative criteria are met before admission, a comprehensive referral process has been established. The referral is completed by the child’s assigned child welfare social worker.
