Number Plates Regulations

made under Sections 19, 20 and 304 of the
Motor Vehicle Act

1 Except as otherwise provided by the Act or the regulations, where a vehicle is registered under the Act, the Department shall assign to the vehicle the following number of number plates:

(a) two number plates, bearing the same numbers, to a camper, farm truck, commercial fisherman truck, service truck, self-powered miscellaneous equipment, a vehicle to bear firefighter plates or antique plates or a vehicle to bear personalized plates, other than a motorcycle; and

(b) except as provided in clause (a), one number plate to a motor vehicle.

2 (1) Where the Department furnishes an owner of a passenger or light commercial motor vehicle with one number plate, the owner shall attach the number plate to the rear of the vehicle and keep it so attached at all times while the vehicle is registered under the Act.

(2) Where the Department furnishes an owner of a heavy commercial motor vehicle with one number plate, the owner shall attach the number plate to the front of the vehicle and keep it so attached at all times while the vehicle is registered under the Act.

(3) Where the Department furnishes the owner of a motor vehicle with two personalized plates, the owner shall attach one number plate to the rear of the vehicle and keep it so attached at all times while the vehicle is registered under this Act.

(4) Where the Department furnishes an owner of a camper, farm truck, commercial fisherman truck, service truck, self-powered miscellaneous equipment [or] a vehicle to bear firefighter plates or antique plates with two number plates bearing the same number, the owner shall attach one number plate to the front of the motor vehicle and one number plate to the rear of the motor vehicle and the owner shall keep the number plates so attached at all times while the motor vehicle is registered under the Act.
